The Argosy, Vol. 52

This July 1892 issue of The Argos presents Chapter XXVI of "The Fate of the Hara Diamond," a serial novel. The chapter depicts Janet's quiet life at Deepley Walls, where she serves as companion to the elderly, caustic Lady Chillington while growing close to the kind Sister Agnes. Physically mistreated by her employer yet finding solace in Agnes's affection, Janet tends to the ailing woman and ministers to her needs. Meanwhile, Father Spiridion visits increasingly. Sister Agnes's health rapidly declines in secret; when she suddenly worsens, Janet is barred from her room for three days. Upon being finally admitted, Janet learns the truth: Sister Agnes reveals herself as Janet's biological mother and Lady Chillington as her grandmother. Sister Agnes discloses that Janet's birth has been shrouded in mystery, promising that a sealed box containing documents explaining everything will be entrusted to Father Spiridion after her death. The dying woman extracts a solemn oath from Janet not to reveal this secret without permission from the priest and Major Strickland.
