This serial installment (Chapters XXXIX–XL) continues a Victorian domestic mystery. Sir Gilbert Clare learns that his daughter-in-law, having returned from Italy, has fled rather than face consequences of her wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Lady Pell—a perceptive guest—orchestrates a romantic opportunity for young Everard Lisle and Ethel Thursby. Having noticed their mutual affection, Lady Pell engineers a visit to Dunarvon Castle ruins and deliberately arranges for the pair to walk alone through the autumn woods while she and Mrs. Tew take tea. Though Lisle had previously proposed to Ethel and been rejected, Lady Pell encourages him to try again. The chapter culminates at the Haunted Pool, where Lisle, emboldened and joyful in Ethel's company, prepares at last to declare himself.
