Glyn, distressed after learning of his beloved Blanche's engagement to the false D'Eyncourt, wanders through London in agitation, eventually traveling to Folkestone to arrange lodgings for his ailing mother. Meanwhile, Mrs. Courtenay Byng visits Brighton to secure affordable rooms, then returns to town. She discovers that Sib Maitland has left the house and gone to visit Kate Beverley, leaving only a note. As evening deepens and Sib does not return, Mrs. Byng grows anxious and departs to fetch her. Glyn, arriving at Charing Cross station at half-past eight, glimpses Sib in a close-fitting ulster hurrying toward the Embankment. Following her in concern, he observes her standing repeatedly at the parapet, gazing into the dark, rushing Thames—behavior suggesting possible distress or desperation. The narrative ends as Glyn continues following her westward toward the railway bridge.
