Colonel Fane's Secret by Sydney Hoppes

Chapter XXXIV finds characters Bates and Vera Fane atop the Lauberhorn in Switzerland in June, where Bates has brought Vera to recover her health following a fire. Their conversation turns to a confession: Vera admits she previously concealed a meeting with Mr. Chetwode on the heath near the lodge, which Bates witnessed while convalescing. She then reveals the full extent of her troubled past—her engagement to Hugh Chetwode, discovery of compromising information involving actress Grace Carlyon, and Hugh's departure to America after promising to learn the truth and determine Grace's innocence or guilt. Hugh has now married Grace after confirming her innocence.

Chapter XXXV shifts to America, where Hugh Chetwode arrives in New York and departs for Boston to locate Grace Carlyon's theatrical company, conflicted between doubt and duty. The narrative appears incomplete.
