# The Warden of the Marches
This serial novel by Sydney C. Grier continues during an armistice at a besieged fort. While Colonel Graham maintains defensive vigilance and soldiers labor to strengthen fortifications after an earthquake—clearing rubble, digging graves for victims, and dredging a canal—the women (Mabel and Flora) observe from the ramparts. Mabel reflects on Fitz Anstruther's ambiguous behavior toward her. On the third day, sentries intercept a gaunt stranger in native dress who reveals himself as Major Dick North, presumed dead, now emaciated but alive. After recovery at the colonel's quarters, he reunites with his wife Georgia and infant son. Mabel witnesses this joyful reunion with tears. Afterward, Fitz approaches Mabel about a promise she made him, indicating romantic tension between them that remains unresolved.
