"Pepperpot," by Henry C. Rowland, is a serial adventure story in the January 1923 issue. The protagonist, Thorne Fairfax, a former U.S. Navy first lieutenant, is voyaging toward British Guiana to prospect for diamonds on the Mazaruni River. While aboard the S.S. Josephine, he discovers a striking photograph of a girl in a book borrowed from a fellow passenger, Mme. Dieudonné, a widow returning to Guadeloupe. The image—showing the girl emerging from a waterfall in a white bathing dress—captivates him. When wireless operator Wayne relays news that millionaire MacNeil Grosvenor seeks a sailing master for his yacht bound for Martinique, Fairfax impulsively accepts the position, altering his plans. The story follows Fairfax's growing obsession with identifying the mysterious girl, whom he believes may be connected to Martinique. Though Mme. Dieudonné refuses to identify her, Fairfax begins an investigation that will consume his newfound voyage.
