Munsey's Magazine, October 1923

This October 1923 issue of Munsey's Magazine features "Sunken Cities," a complete novelette by Douglas Newton. The adventure begins when a schooner captained by Warenne and his scientific colleague Vampage encounters a catastrophic, windless tempest in the Pacific. An undersea earthquake creates mountainous waves that nearly destroy their vessel before depositing it in a newly formed estuary. They discover the earthquake has raised a previously submerged island near the Wahine Rock—revealing an extensive sunken city of massive stone structures, platforms, and colossal statues reminiscent of Incan and Easter Island architecture. While exploring from their damaged ship, the men observe what appears to be a humanoid figure on the island and hear an eerie wailing. Upon attempting to reach shore by raft, Warenne is touched underwater by an unseen creature with a delicate, almost human hand that gently investigates his clothing before suddenly pulling him downward.
