"The Big Noise at Nice," by Alice Rix, is a romantic comedy novelette occupying the issue's opening pages. The plot involves Lord John Victor Alburton, Earl of Gault, a wealthy nobleman with an acute shyness around women. His younger brother Jim secretly marries a Frenchwoman and announces the elopement from Nice, requesting funds and use of Jack's London rooms. Alarmed, Gault consults his solicitor Sir Romney Carter, who devises a scheme: Gault will travel incognito to Nice to investigate the bride's character before word reaches family. Meanwhile, in London, the Duchess of Rothair discovers her schoolmate Kitty Conquest, now destitute after her uncle's embezzlement, modeling at the couture house Mayol. The duchess befriends her. Mayol, their proprietor, conceives a business opportunity, arranging for Kitty and her maid Anne to travel to Nice posing as a wealthy American widow, modeling his latest fashions to English society at the Hôtel Splendide—precisely where Gault, Jim, and Jim's new wife are converging.
