Munsey's Magazine, Volume XXXV (1906)

· April–September 1906

This is a volume index to a general-interest periodical featuring special articles on contemporary topics and a substantial fiction section. The articles cover cultural and historical subjects: biographical profiles of performers (Blanche Bates, Fritzi Scheff, Margaret Anglin, Mrs. Leslie Carter); artistic studies (Emil Fuchs, Franz von Lenbach, Rembrandt); and topical essays on social issues and industry (Christian Socialism, the American public school, etymology and spelling reform, steel manufacturing from Kelly and Bessemer through Andrew Carnegie). Herbert N. Casson contributes a series on immigrant groups in America. The short stories represent popular fiction conventions of the period—domestic dramas, comedies of manners, romance narratives, and adventure tales by contributors including O. Henry, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Dorothy Canfield, and Edward Boltwood. Story titles suggest period preoccupations: marriage, courtship complications, social transgression, and economic aspiration. The volume includes light verse and a theatrical review section.
