This issue collects five mystery tales edited by series creator Leslie Charteris. "The Appalling Politician" by Charteris features Simon Templar investigating a case involving Sir Joseph Whipplethwaite, a tedious Cabinet minister known for endlessly quoting his sports participation (badminton, lacrosse, bowling, etc.) at public dinners. Chief Inspector Claud Eustace Teal arrives at Templar's country hotel on Monday morning with an urgent case. Graham Greene's "The Fallen Idol" treats the conventional butler-and-housekeeper detective setup with originality. Christopher Bush's "Murder at Christmas" centers on detective Ludovic Travers solving a holiday-season crime. Irvin S. Cobb's "Judge Priest—Murder Witness" presents a post-Civil War Southern murder investigation. William MacHarg contributes "The Widow's Share," featuring the police detective O'Malley and a malevolent widow. Additional stories include Octavus Roy Cohen's "Sweet Music and Murder," Margaret Manners' "Death on Little Cat's Feet," and pieces by John Hunter, Irving E. Cox Jr., Geoffrey North, and Edwin Baird.
