The Wolf-Demon, or The Red Arrow of the Far West

The Wolf Demon; or, The Queen of the Kanawha by Albert W. Aiken (Beadle & Adams' 20 Cent Novels, No. 16, 1870) is a frontier tale set in 1780 during border conflicts between American settlers and Native tribes. The narrative opens with a supernatural mystery: a creature combining wolf and human form kills a Shawnee brave with ritualistic marks. The story shifts to two hunters—the famous Daniel Boone and the scarred stranger Abe Lark—who encounter each other while pursuing the same deer near Point Pleasant. After amicable negotiation and mutual respect, they learn of impending Shawnee and Wyandot attacks led by the chief Ke-ne-ha-ha, incited by British interests and guided by the renegade Simon Girty. The narrative then turns toward the Shawnee village at Scioto to reveal the broader conflict.
