Weird Tales, Vol. II No. 1

This July-August 1923 issue of Weird Tales (Volume II, Number 1) contains thirteen short stories and two novelettes. The featured serial is "Sunfire" by Francis Stevens, depicting five American adventurers—explorer Bryce Otway, correspondent Waring, yacht-owner Sigsbee, steward John B., and esthete Tellifer—who discover a massive ancient stone pyramid on a remote Brazilian island. They find an abandoned fleet of boats and a modern airplane at its base, suggesting previous explorers have entered but never left. Upon ascending the grand stairway, they discover recent habitation: woven wall-hangings, a jaguar-hide bed, and golden ornaments in working condition, implying either living inhabitants or recent prisoners. Other contributions include "The Outcasts" by George Warburton Lewis, "The Strange Case of Jacob Arum" by John Harris Borland (witchcraft), "Black Ginger" by Isabel Walker, and works by Starrett, Kline, and others. A nonfiction article on voodooism by Will W. Nelson is also included.
