1 + oan > BEAUTIFUL RIENZL | 59 stored, I poured into my father’s ears the strange events which for some time had caused me so much anxiety. He listened with fixed attention, and unutterable surprise, then rose in agitation and pain. ‘“‘T cannot understand one move in this extraordinary game,” he cried, ‘* but this I am convinced of—your sister has become the victim of some infernal conspiracy!” I scarcely took in his words; he went away more ghastly pale than before, and trod heavily down stairs to his room, and left me alone again. My watch had run down, so I could not tell the time; but I knew the day must be far advanced, and I changed my dress, and flitted to Miss Meredith’s chamber-door with a passing wonder why I had not been visited by any of the servants yet. At my first tap the door was opened, and I beheld Miss Meredith in traveling costume, her hat on the dressing-table, and a tray, containing the remains of her breakfast, on a stand before the cheerfully blazing fire. ““Come in, Miss Rienzi,” she said, politely; ‘‘ I am glad to find you well enough to rise. I have been awaiting you some time.” : She placed a chair for me, upon which i thankfully sat down, for a sort of vertigo had seized me while crossing the corridor, and I was quite dizzy. «¢ You see,” she continued, sitting down and taking her coffee-cup in her hand; ‘‘I am on the eve of returning home. My visit to New York has been shorter than I an- ticipated, but I shall remember it with the deepest con- stancy. Iam glad to have this opportunity of thanking you, Miss Ivanilla Rienzi, for your kindness, and bidding you farewell.” ‘«“You have not heard,” returned, in a husky, uncer- tain voice, ‘‘of the terrible calamity that has happened. When you know the extent of our trouble, you will feel for this stricken family, aud accept my sympathy in your rief.” Fae I have heard everything,” said the young lady, laying down her empty cup. ‘* Your housemaid told me what half the city knows by this time—that Cecil Beaumont’s dead body had been found dashed to pieces at the bottom of a stream! Iam sorry for you, Miss Rienzi—I am sorry that your sister turns out to be a murderess/ It is even worse than if she had lured him from me for loye——’ _— cS a te hve ate pe a - > 3" 4 7 a Be P| GEomicboo eer rion a ie ne seen on, fy ae ESP ee. teed eh, ee oe Pee ae ee Pee Ae ep 0 OS ee ae Ct! an: Ske Sh ak ME AP Bg hak CRE Tne Fears Br i tara Ste ae alain a NG yee ae ee Tes eae la Maat Ey ht oe 5 ar ligt > ¥ ; a Itt Y- a Pid : ‘ . : ‘ y : i: , —- . ¥ . - ’ = oF ee is Cn - at OT Te Pte Sons Ae * 22 * Snel 7 — ae oe . re > acai time . = i. ~—_ > wt to =, 9
