They formed a part of’ that famous band of rangers who did such distinguished service in the Cana- dian wars, Their green uniforms and jaunty caps told that to Despard, who knew the corps. But their. number was small—a few picked scouts who could be trusted in such a service as this, and wlio had been smuggled out of camp one at a time to escape the prying eyes of Putnam, Lewis and Warren, who would not have allowed some of’ their best men to go on so désperate an enterprise. A motley group of soldiers, Indians, and Canadian partt- sans came onin pursuit. Those deadly rifles were lifted, and a close fire poured in the crowded mass.
