The pressure upon his throat was fearful, and the fingers of Jack sank deep into the flesh of his neck, compressing the windpipe, and causing _ the eyes of the wretch to start from their sockets, and his tongue to protrude from his mouth. In vain he struggled to free himself from that fearful clutch ; in vain he tore at the hand that 30 held him ; and, believing his last hour had come, he sank upon his knees, and clasped the legs of Jack, imploringly. “ Wretch!’’ cried Jack, hurling him violently to the floor, and spurning his body with his foot. “JT cannot longer desecrate my fingers by keep- ing them in contact with your contemptible form.
