The atmosphere is sultry and thick, and in the dead calm that broods over the sullen waves lurks the presence of a tropical storm. There is barely breeze enough to keep afloat the canvas of a small, doubtful- looking craft that heads toward the barren island, whose cliffs are just visible through the lurid, murky air to three ‘men who stand upon the quarter-deck of thedingy vessel.
