The sturdy cadet blushed, when it was all over, and he received the congratulations of his friends on the admirable manner in which he had acquitted himself. “| trembled for you,” said pretty Fanny Har- land, as she took his arm, and the two walked up and down the piazza of the hotel, after the graduat- ing exercises were completed. “‘T had an ugly mare, and she was full of vicious- ness, but I made up my mind to master her or break her jaw. It never would have done to fail on the last charge, you know,” he replied with a smile. « And now,” continued the maiden, glancing up in his proud face, “ you are an officer in the United States Army.” “‘T believe I’m a second lieutenant.
