She waited there until the last gleam of crimson had died in the west; tH® sweet, solemn calm deepened, the lovely hush of night lay over the land, the stars began to glimmer in the skies; she listened for the sound of the horse’s gallop; she laid her face on the cool, sweet, dewy grass. Even Mother Earth, so hard and cold, was less cold, less hard than the husband who had married her for honor’s sake without love. Then she heard the gallop of a horse far away on the high-road; he was coming, he whose smile made her heaven. She stood up, trembling with emotion, under the starlight; she saw him, and she went down to the gate. ‘* Lord Carsdale,” she said, as he came near. He did not hear, and she repeated the name. - Lord Carsdale !” Then he heard, and looked more vexed than pleased when his eyes fell on the beautiful face of his young wife. CHAPTER XLYV. THE HUSBAND’S PROMISE. Looking down, Lord Carsdale saw a pale, beautiful face, with a wistful look in the sweet eyes.
