She had a delightful time, though, in spite of her regret for Hazel. Lord Nelson exerted himself to wake her enjoy herself, while Charlie Harwood danced with her several times, taking her in to sup- per, and declared that she was the belle of the evening. It was all like a fairy tale to the young girl. who had never seen anything so gay before—the beautiful women in their court dresses, the glitter of costly jewels, the flashing of the myriads of lights, the mu- sic, the flowers, all served to make up a scene such as she had dreamed of, and read about, but pever realized before. “T suppose I shall never go to another until after I am ‘out,’ and itis a shame that Hazel should have missed it,” she said, with a sigh, as she ran up to her room, upon her return, eager to pour forth to her friend a description of the splendid scene. | But Hazel was sleeping as peacefulygnia scm
