Has the place been filled yet?” She had put the question to the blond and blowsy person at the desk. Her cultivated voice, with its underlying note of weariness, had caught Ferris’s attention. “ Tellynminute,” bubbled the attendant through her gum, savagely plunging a plug into the switchboard. The caller, Ferris thought, stood out against the background of the other girl like a fading rose before an egregious sun- flower. Tom Ferris wasn’t much of a lady’s = ] OOKS like the big town had got the 189 man, but he wasn’t young for nothing. He believed he could tell a lady when he saw one. This girl was a lady by all the ear- marks and, unless his eyesight was all wrong, a lady in distress.
