[\ the spring of 1917, an old river pirate named Peter Reading in a drunken frenzy knocks down his fine-spirited daughter, Judith. While she is unconscious Jerry the Rat murders Old Peter for his money. When Judith comes to, Jerry blames the killing on her. She flees, and stows herself away on the yacht of young Stephen Fenwick, which she knows is to sail that night for Brazil with its young master. The first day out Judith is discovered. As Stephen is planning to give her his sister’s suite to live in, the captain comes down the deck looking extremely disturbed ; the wireless of the Psyche has just picked up the news that the United States has declared the existence of a state of war! CHAPTER VI. THE STOWAWAY. HE first excitement caused on the yacht by the news of the declaration of war settled down during luncheon to a discussion between the doctor and Stephen of wars ancient and modern, and to speculation as to whether great nations could be built without a foundation laid by war. Later, while the good ship Psyche flew steadily onward through dreaming placid waters, they became buried in the in- tricacies of a well-fought game of chess, and forgot that there was a war! But the captain and all the crew had renewed their vigilance. After an hour Captain Lang interrupted the game with apologies. “About the girl,” he said, standing at Stephen’s elbow and looking over the chess- board, ‘‘ she’s still in my cabin.” Stephen glanced up, and regarded the captain rather vaguely, his mind still con- centrated upon his next move. “The girl?” he asked. ‘‘ Oh, you mean the little stowaway.
