Although Bully Forbes, a skipper who holds many an ocean record, loses ownership of the new vessel through misfortune, he agrees to sail her for the new owners, Nathanael Gertridge, a skinflint, and his son, Nat. Mary Williston, niece of MacKay, presents Captain Forbes with a scarlet burgee to fly at his main truck, and makes the acquaintance of young Richard Dunbar, his mate. Nat Gertridge is not pleased at the girl’s liking for Dunbar, and spies upon them before the Valkyrie is launched at Newburyport. Just before the vessel is due to sail from Boston Nat brings about Dunbar’s discharge aS mate, but Forbes intervenes and restores him to his post. The vessel sails with a choice crew of “ packet rats,” sent aboard by Nat, and Dunbar finds a spirit of revolt on board that flames into mutiny in his watch. He is injured by a mutineer.
