He was singing — singing “A la claire fontaine.” I have heard that romantic chanson sung many times, and in circumstances as far apart as the poles, but never have I heard it on the lips of a French-Canadian peasant without its reaching my heart; and only those who have heard it sung as I have can appreciate the amazement that was mine. Ledoux’s great voice seemed softened— even tender. His was the tone one uses at night to a troubled child. The snow was whirling about me madly, Pushing the door open, I stepped inside.
