No. 20: "A Lady Bachelor, or A Final Triumph" by Old Sleuth (1895) This serial detective narrative opens at a summer hotel where an unnamed male observer, physically disabled and habitually studying human nature, witnesses the sudden social downfall of an attractive young woman named Eloise Studevant. The narrator deduces her secret: she has committed a terrible crime. The narrative then flashes back years earlier to the grand Hudson River hotel where Eloise, a twenty-year-old of aristocratic family, fell in love with George Edicott, a wealthy Yale-educated banker. A secret discovered during an evening ball—revealed through a mysterious incident on the piazza—seemingly destroys their relationship. The subsequent chapters promise confessions, suspense, and the penalties and comic turns of the unfolding story, examining how society responds to Eloise's exposure and whether her punishment is deserved.
