This September 1892 issue of the Primrose Series (No. 39) presents "Richard Forrest, Bachelor" by Clement R. Marley, author of the popular "Doctor Jack" series. The narrative, set in the coastal village of Wallford in the American South, opens with two orphaned sisters—Rose Delmar, twenty-four, intelligent and dutiful, and eighteen-year-old Florence, spirited and charming. Following their father's death (their mother deceased earlier), Rose has become Florence's guardian and moral guide. Though financially constrained since the family's Civil War losses, Rose devotes herself to her sister's wellbeing. The plot commences with domestic scenes exploring their relationship: Florence returns from a long horseback ride full of youthful exuberance while Rose attends to household duties and needlework. The narrative examines themes of sisterly love, economic hardship, feminine propriety, and the younger sister's growing maturity within a provincial Southern setting.
