About this issue

"The Wizard of Granada" by M. T. Caldor appeared in this February 1895 issue of The Famous Fiction Series, a monthly subscription publication. The novel opens in medieval Granada with Sir Ildefonse, a Spanish knight, encountering a pitched battle between bandits and Moorish soldiers in a forest. After hearing a woman's scream, he charges into combat, routing the attackers with his squire Alana. He rescues a veiled noblewoman of mysterious identity, who commands Moorish attendants and a man named Basilio. Basilio, initially knocked unconscious, awakens suspicious of the Spanish knight's sudden appearance. The lady identifies herself as "Xina" (apparently a princess) and invites Sir Ildefonse to accompany her party back to Granada. The chapter concludes with Xina cryptically suggesting to Basilio that Sir Ildefonse himself is the object of their secret quest.
