About this issue

This installment of Nat Todd; Or, The Fate of the Sioux Captive by Edward S. Ellis (No. 10, 1877 Beadle and Adams edition) follows the frontier adventure of Nathan Todd as he searches for Irene Merment, a woman lost to Indian captors a decade earlier in the Northwestern wilderness. After separating from William Relmond and Imogene Merment at the Missouri River, Todd travels through mountain forests and prairies hunting for clues. He camps at Death Rock, fights off mountain wolves, recovers a hidden canoe and hat, captures a saddled pony formerly owned by Imogene, and retrieves supplies from a lake. When the chief Upsarena unexpectedly encounters him, Todd fabricates a story about a tethered horse across the water, setting up a confrontation. The narrative emphasizes frontier survival, hunting, and the protagonist's complicated negotiations with the Indian tribe holding him.
