About this issue

This 1879 Beadle and Adams pulp serial, copyright 1879, presents "Dick Dead-Eye, The Boy Smuggler; or, The Cruise of the Vixen" by Col. Prentiss Ingraham, author of "The Flying Yankee" and other adventure tales. The narrative opens with coastal fishermen—some allegedly smugglers—witnessing a chase between the swift sloop Flyaway and a revenue cutter through island channels. The pursued vessel is commanded by Captain Jasper Lucas. The cutter's pilot is revealed to be Jasper Lucas himself—a suspected traitor. Young Estelle, a fifteen-year-old girl with red-gold hair, identifies Dick, "the Boy Smuggler," commanding the sloop. When the Flyaway's mast snaps in a gale, Dick sets the vessel ablaze before escaping by boat. The cutter, pursuing through the Reef-channel, strikes a fatal reef and wrecks. Estelle rows out toward the wreck to rescue survivors, defying her father's warnings. Dick simultaneously launches a second rescue boat toward the disabled revenue cutter. A maritime adventure tale emphasizing heroism, seamanship, and coastal intrigue.
