About this issue

This frontier adventure serial, appearing in Beadle's Half-Dime Library (August 1900), follows Alfred Haverland, an American settler who has carved a homestead from wilderness in western New York approximately seventy-five years prior. When the eccentric Seth Jones—a former Revolutionary scout from New Hampshire—arrives with warnings of Indian attacks incited by British agitation, Haverland's carefully constructed peace with neighboring tribes begins to unravel. Despite his belief that fair treatment has earned him safety, Haverland learns of nearby settlements burned and destroyed. The narrative establishes domestic tension as Haverland struggles with mounting dread while his family—including his beautiful fifteen-year-old daughter Ina and his wife—grows anxious. The serial develops themes of frontier vulnerability, the precariousness of settlement, and impending danger, while contrasting Haverland's reasoned faith in diplomacy with Jones's seasoned frontier skepticism regarding Native American trustworthiness.
