About this issue

Dandy Rock's Doom, or a Thrilling Story of the War for the Valley of Gold, by G. Waldo Browne, is a Western adventure serial. The narrative opens with Dandy Rock (The-Man-from-Texas), a prosperous gold miner adorned with gold ornaments, and Alpine Luke (Shadow, the Unlucky Miner) witnessing Indigenous warriors preparing to burn a captive maiden, the Mountain Rose, at a stake in the valley below. Rock and Luke negotiate with the half-breed leader Evil Eyes for her release. Evil Eyes agrees to free the girl if one of the men surrenders in her place. Luke and Rock raffle for the duty using sticks; Luke draws the short stick and sacrifices himself. When Evil Eyes betrays them, firing on Rock, the Texan shoots the chief. Luke is killed in the ensuing gunfire while Rock escapes with the maiden. They flee toward Golden Cave but encounter Buck Warner, Rock's mortal enemy and a desperado claiming ownership of Gold-dust Valley, leading thirty armed men against Rock's claim.
