"The Sky Demon: Rainbolt the Ranger," by Oll Coomes, is a frontier adventure serial set in 1869. The plot centers on a kidnapping orchestrated by Duval Dungarvon, a notorious Black Hills robber-captain, and Blufe Brandon, a renegade Cheyenne chief, who abduct young Silvia Sanford from a Union Pacific train to extort money from her father, Colonel Wayland Sanford. The colonel, an experienced Indian-fighter and former cavalry commander, immediately pursues the kidnappers with four young companions—his nephews Willis and Frank Armond, attorney Walter Lyman, and physician Frank Rodman. Their search leads them to a mountain camp where they encounter two guardians: Ebony Jim, a Black man the colonel had previously hunted, and Flick O'Flynn, an Irish frontiersman. The narrative establishes a complex web of past enmities and present dangers across the Black Hills wilderness.
