About this issue

By T. C. Harbaugh, published in Beadle and Adams' weekly dime novel series, March 4, 1882. Dictionary Nat, a genteel young traveler from Virginia City, journeys toward the rough mining settlement of Cinnamon City in Montana to confront his enemy, Revelation Rube. Five miles from town, Nat encounters Bill Bravo, a mountain man accompanied by two massive grizzly bears. After Bravo reveals he previously drove off Rube while the outlaw decorated a guide-post with symbols of violence, the two become partners. Bravo invites Nat to his cavern home—built into a mountainside and guarded by his trained bears Rocky Dan and Dandy Dick—where he introduces Nat to four young bear cubs. The narrative establishes Nat and Bravo's alliance as they prepare to enter Cinnamon City to pursue Nat's vendetta against Revelation Rube.
