This issue of Beadle and Adams (No. 292, February 1883) features "Sancho Pedro, the Boy Bandit; or, The Fighting Pards of Sierra Flat" by Major E.L. St. Vrain, a Western adventure serial. The story follows a stagecoach traveling through Rocky Pass in California, where passengers—including miners, a naturalist, and two boys (Edgar Benson and John Jones)—encounter the notorious young road-agent Sancho Pedro and his masked gang. After robbing the stage, Pedro detains seven passengers against their will, frustrated that they haven't surrendered something he specifically seeks. The narrative establishes Pedro as a dandyish but ruthless outlaw in velveteen clothing who torments his captives. Young Benson chafes at the passive surrender, while the other passengers capitulate. The OCR degrades toward the story's end, making final plot details unclear, though Pedro's determination to extract a mysterious item from his prisoners remains central.
