About this issue

The Hidden Lodge: The Little Hater of the Adirondacks by T. C. Harbaugh, serialized in Beadle's Half-Dime Library, presents a frontier adventure set in early nineteenth-century Adirondack forest. Two woodsmen, Tarsus Nightwell and Simon Oldfoot, become lost in the mountains during a stormy March night, bewildered despite their expertise. They encounter what appears to be a mysterious pursuer, only to discover it is "Piney Paul," a sixteen-year-old boy in buckskin garb who dwells in the wilderness. Paul, equipped with rifle and a bugle disguised as a powder-horn, controls the mountain terrain and knows secret trails. The narrative reveals mentions of gold and a hidden lodge—a cavern dwelling with pictographic walls decorated by an unknown hand. The story concerns parties seeking something valuable in these remote mountains.
