About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams presents "Baby Sam, the Boy Giant of the Yellowstone; or, Old Spokane Joe's Trust," by Oll Coomes. The adventure serial follows four young Montanans—Frank and Wilma Rodman, Sarah Marshall, and Frederick Sears—on an expedition into Yellowstone Park. They await their guide, nineteen-year-old Samuel Burling, a physically remarkable youth known as Baby Sam, renowned for exceptional strength, marksmanship, and outdoor skills. Sam arrives late, having fought off approximately fifty Indians attempting to stampede cattle. The party plans to canoe to "Wilma Isle," an island in Mary's Lake. While ferrying the men, Sam discovers a wounded young Crow warrior named Sparrowhawk in the water who warns that six Sioux warriors are hidden on the island, threatening the two women already there. The narrative develops frontier conflict involving Indian raids, cattle rustling, and survival in the wilderness landscape.
