About this issue

This issue contains "Apache Jack's White Trail," a Western adventure tale by Frederick Dewey. The story opens in the scorching desert region between the Colorado and Rio Grande rivers, where a small party—including the wealthy Mexican landowner Señor Martinez, his beautiful daughter Isidore, U.S. Army officers and soldiers—has become lost. Señor Martinez urgently needs to reach San Diego to claim an inheritance before his hacienda is sold at foreclosure. The mysterious Captain Hart, a suspicious-looking ranger, arrives on horseback and offers to guide them. However, a giant scout named Apache Jack suddenly emerges from the darkness, accusing Hart of lying about the route and revealing Hart as a deceiver. The story develops into a tense confrontation, with Apache Jack threatening Hart when the captain reaches for his weapon. The narrative introduces themes of danger, deception, and frontier survival amid the hostile landscape.
