About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly (May 1887) contains the serial "Deadhold, The 'Kid' Detective: A Story of the Worked-Out Mine" by George C. Jenks. The opening chapters establish a mystery involving Frank Trenton, a young boy from New York who arrives in Pittsburgh seeking work. Barney Driver, a recently released convict, intercepts Frank on railroad tracks near the Monongahela River, intending to kill him. An engineer rescues Frank from an oncoming train; Driver retrieves him and throws him into the river. A mysterious vigilante figure—"The Demon Doctor," a seven-foot-tall being in black robes emanating strange colored light—intervenes, rescuing Frank and confronting Driver. The narrative shifts to the Star Steel Works, where Driver works as a foreman; conflict erupts with worker Mike Carroll. A supplementary story, "The Demon Doctor," appears fragmented in the OCR text.
