Donovan reveals that Clarice married George Glenroy after meeting him at Martha's Vineyard, where Glenroy worked as a hotel clerk; Glenroy later acquired an "Honorable" title through prominent office. Bristol meets with Cora Cool in a hotel room, learning her father has disappeared after arriving in Boston five weeks earlier with approximately ten thousand dollars. Her mother, Clarice, had abandoned the family six years ago taking valuable diamonds, including an inscribed gold ring worth one thousand dollars. Bristol undertakes to investigate the case while Cora remains hidden in Boston.
