About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams Weekly (Vol. XXIV, No. 599, January 15, 1889) features "Happy Harry's Hurrah Pard," a Western adventure tale by prolific pulp author Philip S. Warne. The story follows Happy Harry's encounter with masked bandits on a storm-dark Montana road near the mining camp Hicks's Hurrah. Shot and nearly finished off by ambushers, Harry is rescued by a mysterious, small but extraordinarily skilled gunfighter who introduces himself as Jim. The stranger swiftly dispatches multiple attackers with modifications to his revolvers—triggers removed for speed—and demonstrates remarkable combat proficiency. The two form a partnership with strict terms: Jim demands absolute freedom from questions and strict obedience from Harry regarding future business of unknown nature, promising potential profit. By story's end they reach Hicks's Hurrah where Harry enthusiastically endorses his rescuer to local miners as an exceptional gunfighter.
