About this issue

This 1878 Beadle and Adams dime novel presents Chapter LI of "The White Indian; or, The Scouts of the Yellowstone" by Captain J. F. C. Adams. Explorer Duke Barlow, returning to camp near the Yellowstone, encounters a mysterious luminous object performing strange aerial maneuvers—swaying pendulum-like, ascending, and diving—visible against a moonlit ridge. Barlow investigates despite uncertainty about his own sobriety, eventually witnessing the light vanish. He then hears disembodied moans from above and detects stealthy movement. Drawing his revolver, he discovers a white man—Zadok Brown—crouching nearby. After firing warning shots, Barlow questions Brown about his presence and whether he's seen Indians in the area. Brown becomes evasive about having witnessed something larger than Indians, claiming he dreamed it. The passage blends frontier mystery, supernatural elements, and character interaction.
