About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' dime novel contains "Turning the Tables on Satan" by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the Deadwood Dick series. The featured story, "Deadwood Dick Jr. in Detroit," presents R. M. Bristol (Deadwood Dick Jr.), a Government Secret Service detective, hired by grain merchant Horace Elton to investigate a case in Detroit. Elton claims his grandfather Jacob's recent will leaving a fortune to his sister Ethel is forged, allegedly the work of Harry Henley—Elton's former clerk whom he banished for loving Ethel. The will has not been probated; Elton demands Dick locate Henley and uncover evidence of bigamy and forgery. Dick, skeptical of Elton's motives and sympathetic to the oppressed family, accepts the investigation while privately determining to protect Henley if Elton's suspicions prove unfounded.
