About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly periodical (No. 615) contains the opening installments of "The Heathen Chine Mission" by J. C. Cowdrick (author of "Cibuta John," "Disco Dan," and other series), presented as Chapters I and II. The action-adventure serial follows Harry Dentwood, a college-educated but impoverished telegraph operator, who accepts an assignment as station agent in the rough frontier town of Chained Cyclone. When the local bully Cinnamon Jim arrives to intimidate the new agent, Dentwood systematically defeats him and his associates through superior boxing and martial technique, earning the town's respect. The narrative emphasizes Dentwood's physical prowess, his educated background, and his use of precise fighting technique (including a notable kick) to maintain order, while the townspeople recognize him as a leader capable of combating their lawlessness.
