About this issue

Dandy Jack; or, The Outlaw of the Oregon Trail by T. C. Harbaugh. A frontier adventure serial from Beadle and Adams' dime novel series (1878). The narrative opens on the Oregon Trail with guide Lige Butler discovering his wagon, two companions, and supplies have vanished overnight. He recounts to a mysterious stranger how Luke Whittles, a member of his emigrant train, separated him from camp under false pretenses of checking for raiders, then made off with the covered wagon. Among the captives are "Dandy Jack," a fearless boy, and Estil, a young woman. Butler suspects collusion between Whittles and the notorious bandit Oregon Leon, who commands Snake Country. The stranger reveals himself as Oregon Leon and warns Butler against pursuit before riding off. The serial then follows the wagon itself: Luke Whittles, a villainous driver, transports the bound captives across alkali plains at relentless speed toward unspecified territory. Dandy Jack and Estil remain imprisoned within, powerless to escape or assist one another. Whittles drives the mule team without rest toward the "jumping-off place."
