About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams Weekly (No. 98, 1892) contains the opening installment of "The Jamboree at Early Bird Bar" by William G. Patten, an author known for the Violet Vane and Daisy Dare series. The narrative depicts an opening celebration at Dutch Karl's newly constructed Palace Saloon in the frontier town of Early Bird Bar, following fire's destruction of his previous establishment. The densely populated scene introduces numerous town characters: Easy Ned Lester, the quick-draw poker sharp; Dapper Davy, a deceptively mild-mannered gambler with a hidden dangerous streak; Major Selban Hunter, the town magnate; Hunk Riley, a prominent bully; and others. Tensions simmer among these characters, particularly between displaced foreman Eben Sutton and his replacement, and between Injun Jim and Major Hunter. A stammering tenderfoot from Maine arrives at the saloon seeking dancing partners, promptly becoming the target of Riley's bullying before the stranger demonstrates surprising fighting capability.
