About this issue

This is the opening installment of "Sol Ginger, the Giant Trapper; The Flower of the Blackfeet" by Albert W. Aiken, serialized in Beadle's Half-Dime Library (1879). The narrative establishes an expedition into Blackfoot territory from Fort Benton on the upper Missouri River. Two travelers—the older, methodical Roderick Wright and young, drifting Harry Courtney—meet aboard the steamboat Mountain Belle. Wright reveals a cryptic plan to obtain something worth fifty thousand dollars from Blackfoot country, recruiting Courtney with a promised ten-thousand-dollar share. Courtney suggests Sol Ginger, a legendary old trapper known for his reluctance to shed blood and his intimate knowledge of the Flathead River region. Wright enlists guides to navigate dangerous territory while retrieving what he calls "treasure"—Wright's ambiguous references suggest the object is animate and capable of resistance. The serial establishes frontier adventure conventions: perilous wilderness, Native American conflict, prospecting ambitions, and mystery surrounding Wright's unnamed objective.
