About this issue

This issue of Beadle's Half-Dime Library presents "Saddle-King Sam," a western serial by Oll Coomes (author of "Whip King Jo" and "Silent Saul"). The story opens at a Montana cattle ranch during a roundup, where stockmen convene to address suspected cattle-stealing. They debate hiring either young Sam Halliday—known as Saddle-King Sam, a fearless horsemanship expert—or experienced range detective "Lasso" Jack Rubell for patrol duty. Sam is chosen by vote. En route to town, Sam encounters his love interest, Zoe Randall, an eighteen-year-old beauty. While riding together, they encounter a rattlesnake, which Sam dispatches with his cattle-whip. A veiled woman on horseback then confronts them, revealing herself as Belle Rankin—identified with apparent history and hostility toward Zoe.
