About this issue

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly contains the serialized adventure "The Boy Miners; or, The Enchanted Island," by Edward S. Ellis, a prolific dime-novel author. The story, set in the Yellowstone country, follows young Edwin Inwood, his brother George, and a large Black worker named Jim Tubbs as they prospect for gold. When a group of Mohave Indians discovers their hidden mining operation and traps them in a cave, the boys employ quick thinking and gunpowder to survive. Edwin devises an improvised bomb by drilling into a stone and packing it with gunpowder and fuse. The narrative emphasizes frontier action, survival against indigenous adversaries, and the resourcefulness of the protagonists facing siege conditions in their cave refuge.
