About this issue

This Beadle and Adams dime novel, #976 of "Plucky Dan: The Boy Spy-Detective; or, A Greenhorn on Guard" by Ned St. Meyer, follows a foundling orphan named Dan Dart from rural Grayville. After arriving in New York with only three dollars, Dan overhears criminals planning to steal valuable musical instruments from importer Frederic Shepland—a gentleman who once befriended and rewarded him. Dan reconnects with Shepland, who hires him at seven dollars weekly. Suspecting his own employee F. Carter Brooks of dishonesty, Shepland enlists Dan to spy on the young clerk and identify his criminal accomplice, Nick. The plan involves Dan boarding at Brooks's residence on Waverley Place to monitor their activities and prevent a theft reportedly targeting ten thousand dollars in goods. The narrative combines detective intrigue with themes of orphan redemption and moral duty.
