About this issue

This Beadle and Adams dime novel, The French Spy; or, The Fall of Montreal by W. J. Hamilton, presents a historical adventure set during the French and Indian War period. The narrative opens with a dramatic street rescue in Montreal: Despard, an English spy living covertly among the French, intercepts three men abducting the gentlewoman Marie D'Arigny and carries her to safety at a musketeer guard post. Marie reveals she was seized without explanation. The story unfolds through exposition that Marie's brother was murdered by the villain Mariot, a crime known to only a select group including Despard, Captain Lamont, and the American escapee Wilton (called "the Silent Slayer"). Mariot remains at large in Montreal, pursuing Marie's hand while avoiding exposure. Despard, despite his English hatred of France, operates as an intelligence agent providing the English with military information. The narrative explores Despard's bitter isolation and the complex web of secrets binding these characters together as danger and romantic tension mount around Marie.
