About this issue

Blackhawk, the Bandit; or, The Young Indian Scout by Percy B. St. John is an adventure narrative set in the Texas wilderness and frontier. The story follows Edward Blake, a disappointed young English naval officer, and his Wacco Indian guide Chinchea as they travel the prairie and forests seeking adventure. While camping, they discover a nearby gang of thirty armed men—both Indian and white—commanded by a notorious bandit leader named Blackhawk, whom Blake recognizes from his past. Chinchea strategically stampedes the gang's horses to enable their escape, then leads Blake to a hilltop camp overlooking a deep chasm where he signals with mysterious cries. The narrative emphasizes frontier survival, vigilance against outlaws, and interracial cooperation against common threats.
